Hyundai And Kia Owners: For The Quickest Charge, Don't Use Tesla Superchargers
"It's confusing, I know. Hyundai and Kia recently gained access to Tesla's widespread Supercharger network. Their latest electric vehicles even come with the Tesla-style charging port from the factory, so owners can visit those chargers without fumbling with bulky adapters. And now here I am, telling you to think twice before using a Tesla Supercharger in a Kia EV6 or EV9, or a Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, or Ioniq 9. Let me explainand, hopefully, save you a bit of time at the charging station."
"Hyundai and Kia's latest EVs, all built on the same underlying platform called E-GMP, have the capability to charge at well over 200 kW. The Ioniq 5 has even been known to hit over 260 kW, well above its official rating. That's all very good, especially for a non-luxury EV. But you won't see that at Tesla Superchargers. This is bad news because the more kW you see, the quicker the charge."
Hyundai and Kia models built on the E-GMP platform have factory-installed Tesla-style charging ports and gained access to Tesla Superchargers. Those vehicles are capable of charging well over 200 kW—some Ioniq 5 units have reached over 260 kW—but Tesla Superchargers currently limit charging for these cars to significantly lower rates. Tests show a 2024 Kia EV6 capped at about 97 kW (others report ~120 kW), while Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 9 often peak near 126 kW at Superchargers. Third-party networks like EVgo and Electrify America typically deliver much faster charging for these EVs.
