Google announced a fix for Chromecast devices that became unusable due to an expired security certificate authority. Users reported issues starting March 9, impacting compatibility with official Google apps. Although unofficial apps remain functional, the issue caused devices to display an 'untrusted device' error. The fix, an over-the-air firmware update, will utilize a new certificate authority valid until 2045. However, devices that were factory reset cannot immediately receive the update until the initial certificate problem is resolved. Users are advised to keep devices connected to Wi-Fi for the patch installation.
We are still working to resolve the issue that occurred for users who performed a factory reset during initial troubleshooting.
We've started rolling out a fix for the problem with Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices, which will be completed over the next few days.
