Google has announced the discontinuation of its Nest Protect Smart Smoke and CO alarm and Nest x Yale smart door lock to make way for new device models. This decision aligns with Google’s aim to enhance its smart home ecosystem, focusing on innovation with partners like First Alert. While the Nest Protect has been a favorite among users for its reliability, a new First Alert product is set to launch at $129, integrating with Google’s home system. Existing devices will continue to function until their expiration dates.
In a post on its Nest community forum, Google says it made the decision to ditch its popular smoke alarm and door lock as part of its move toward 'building a platform that all device makers and developers can use to spur innovation in the home.' They also emphasized that as the smart home evolves, they must continue to refine their portfolio of devices to meet customer needs.
The new First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm, launching later this year, will cost $129 and interconnect with existing Nest Protect devices via Google's Weave / Thread communication protocol, sending alerts through the Google Home app.
