"It's particularly special for us because you know, it's in our backyard, right? We've been able to demonstrate this aircraft around the world, and now here's an opportunity for us to do it you know in our backyard,"
"So we have a pilot in the aircraft, and up to four passengers, when we fly we takeoff like a helicopter, then we go through a transition, that transition phase turns you from a helicopter like hover, into a fixed wing flight,"
"It's very much like ordering an Uber - in fact, we are partnering with Uber so you're able to order the whole journey through Uber app or through the Joby app,"
Joby Aviation brought an electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft to the Salinas Airshow, offering the first public opportunity to see and step into the vehicle at an airshow. The aircraft seats a pilot plus up to four passengers, takes off like a helicopter and transitions to fixed-wing flight for cruise. Joby staff and engineers engaged with attendees to explain operation and a partnership with Uber enables booking journeys through the Uber or Joby app. Short urban routes like a seven-minute trip to JFK from New York City are presented as examples. The two-day event draws about 65,000 attendees; the Blue Angels canceled due to the government shutdown.
