The Holy Cross Brooklyn Outreach Center (HCBOC) hosted its annual fundraiser, attended by community members and dignitaries like Mayor Eric Adams. HCBOC has been instrumental in serving over 120,000 meals to the homeless since its inception in 2008, assisting 30 to 40 families daily. President Maria Vasaka-Monioudis highlighted the collaboration among diverse community volunteers, particularly the youth, promoting a culture of giving. Fr. Gerasimos Makris emphasized a compassionate approach reaching beyond the Orthodox community, acknowledging shared human suffering and the importance of educating others to give rather than take.
"Today's fundraiser marks a very special day for us," adding that since 2008, when HCBOC first became an entity, it has served more than 120,000 meals to the homeless in New York City.
"The Outreach Center helps anywhere from 30 to 40 families daily," Vasaka-Monioudis said. "We are blessed to have volunteers from so many communities helping out and especially the youth of different communities coming together for a good cause."
"There are a lot of people, including those behind the scenes, who are working very hard," Makris said. "We have to keep on remembering that there are people who are suffering both here in the United States and also abroad."
