Nonprofits beware: GoFundMe created 1.4 million unauthorized accounts * Oregon ArtsWatch
"We are very sorry for this and take responsibility for missing the mark. Trust is foundational to our work with nonprofits, and we are fully committed to rebuilding it through better communication, collaboration, and partnership,"
"The unauthorized pages really look legit and ours was fairly accurate. They've obviously mined public data. When I found our page, my real worry was that if I didn't claim it someone else could commandeer it, misrepresent us, and raise money in our name,"
GoFundMe automatically created about 1.4 million fundraising accounts for nonprofit organizations without notifying or obtaining permission from the groups. The created pages included logos and identifying information and suggested an optional 14% "tipping fee" in addition to the standard nonprofit processing fee of 2.2% plus $0.30 per credit card transaction. The tipping option and logos on unclaimed pages have been removed. GoFundMe CEO Tim Cadogan apologized and pledged to rescind parts of the nonprofit accounts program. Nonprofit leaders expressed concern that the realistic-looking unauthorized pages could be commandeered, misrepresent organizations, and enable fraud.
