"But have they given enough? No,"
"If you live in this country and started a business, you benefited from this country,"
"And I believe to whom much is given, much is expected, and they should be giving back more, far more than they are."
Melinda French Gates cofounded the Giving Pledge in 2010 with Bill Gates and Warren Buffett to encourage billionaires to donate significant portions of their wealth. The Giving Pledge includes roughly 250 individuals from 30 countries, with signatories such as Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Ellison, and Reid Hoffman. Some signatories give at a massive scale, but the overall philanthropic effort remains insufficient given the benefits accrued from U.S. education, regulatory frameworks, and venture capital systems. MacKenzie Scott’s $70 million UNCF donation is an example of large gifts. French Gates left The Gates Foundation in June 2024 and now runs Pivotal Ventures, which focuses on women’s issues.
