"Trying to compete head-on with traditional semiconductor giants would be futile,"
"But in photonics, where the next generation of processing will come from, the costs are far lower. That gives the UK a genuine opportunity to become a global leader in photonic computing."
"In financial services, for example, transactions can be processed confidentially,"
Optalysys raised £23 million to accelerate commercial rollout of light-powered photonic chips and to expand operations into the United States. The investment round was led by Northern Gritstone with backing from the UK government's National Security Strategic Investment Fund. The company develops chips that use photons instead of electrical currents, which substantially reduces energy consumption, produces less heat and enables encrypted data processing while in motion. Designs are developed in-house while manufacturing is outsourced to specialist foundries at the University of Southampton and partners in Belgium and Singapore, with an additional site planned in New York state. The immediate commercial focus is secure computing across finance, defence and critical infrastructure.
