Laura Courtney from Kerry will skydive on June 28, jumping from a plane thousands of feet in the air to support the Kerry Mental Health Association. The jump is dedicated to her late uncle, whose loss affected her family, and she aims to turn grief into something positive. She says mental health remains a taboo subject and that there is not enough help or support in Kerry for people who need it. Working as a beautician in Killarney, she often listens to clients who open up about mental health issues. Her fundraiser has reached €765 toward a €1500 goal, and she feels encouraged by the rapid progress.
"“I feel that mental health is still such a taboo subject in this day and age. I just feel like there's not enough help or support in Kerry for people that need it. I'm not just doing this for my uncle, I'm doing it for mental health supports in general”"
"“I'm a beautician in Killarney and my job comes with a lot of mental health issues. Girls will be coming in and talking and telling me about this and that. I'm like an agony aunt for them. They can open up to me,” she said."
"“His loss deeply affected Laura's family and so she's doing a skydive in his honour to turn that grief into something positive.”"
"“I'm absolutely thrilled. I set the initial fundraising bar really low because I didn't want to be upset if I didn't hit the target and raise the money for them. If it goes over and we raise more, that's great but even if it just hits the target, I'll be thrilled as well. It's only been up two days and I'm already halfway there which is nuts!”"
