"Every single time somebody sits down at the Grandma Stand, it's a different story but it's always the same, too. I think they're looking for people to say, 'It's going to be OK,' and, 'We need you.'"
"Remember you are worthy. And live your life understanding what you bring and that you're worthy of all the goodness."
"They usually tell you things that they probably had no idea they were gonna tell anyone that day."
The Grandma Stand, initiated by Mike Matthews in 2012, allows grandmothers to share wisdom and compassion with strangers. After the passing of his grandmother Eileen, Matthews expanded the project to include other matriarchs. Now present in eight cities, the Grandma Stand features a rotating roster of volunteer grandmas who listen to visitors' stories. Participants often seek reassurance and affirmation of their worth, with volunteers emphasizing the importance of recognizing one's value and goodness in life.
