Galway aquatic centre bid revived with 3.5m Government allocation
€3.5 million has been provided toward Galway’s regional aquatic centre in Knocknacarra. Galway City Council faced a €7 million shortfall and agreed to match funding negotiated with Government to close the deal and begin construction. The remaining cost is expected to be covered locally through a combination of the city council and philanthropic sources. A council representative has been nominated to sit on the project company board to support presenting the project to the Department for further funding. The council must relook at how it will acquire the €3.5 million match. Plans were granted in June 2025, and a 35 x 25m pool is intended to relieve pressure on existing facilities and support swim and water polo clubs.
"“The rest of the cost will be borne here locally by an amalgamation of the city council and philanthropic sources,” Minister O'Donovan said announcing the funding on social media."
"Galway City Council was in a €7 million shortfall on the project and agreed to match whatever funding negotiated with Government to close the deal and start construction."
"Cllr Keane thought establishing his position on a board of the project would be a “premature” decision as no funding was secured at the time of his instatement during an April Galway City Council meeting. However, the representation was needed in order for the project to be presented to the Department to request any funding."
"“There was a phenomenal philanthropic donation by one individual, and the local authority need to match that,” Cllr Keane said. Cllr Keane believes once the €3.5 million match is secured, the project will get the green light for design and tendering."
