Festivalgoers' urine to fertilise trees in Brecon Beacons restoration scheme
"Using a waste product to grow trees is a circular solution that can revitalize our struggling native species. We need to stop flushing crop and tree-growing nutrients down the loo and start using them to increase our fertiliser security."
"I love the idea that by the end of this three-year project, revellers will have created a fledgling Welsh forest, which could flourish for hundreds of years."
"NPK Recovery takes a mobile laboratory to events, enabling the urine to be processed into fertiliser at source. The firm uses bacteria to recover nitrogen and other naturally occurring nutrients from the urine, creating an odour-free liquid fertiliser."
A project aims to grow 4,500 trees in a Welsh national park using fertilizer made from festivalgoers' urine. NPK Recovery created the fertilizer from urine collected at Boomtown festival, producing 540 liters during the 2025 event. The initiative, supported by the Forestry Commission, will also utilize urine from other sources over three years. Trials indicate the fertilizer's effectiveness matches traditional alternatives. The project promotes nutrient recycling and aims to establish a sustainable forest, with the first Scots pine seed planted to mark its launch.
