"I agree with love of humanity, and I think we should try to do things that help our fellow human beings,"
"But it's very hard."
"The biggest challenge I find with my foundation is trying to give money away in a way that is truly beneficial to people,"
"It's very easy to give money away to get the appearance of goodness. It is very difficult to give money away for the reality of goodness. Very difficult."
Elon Musk acknowledges a commitment to helping humanity but describes philanthropy as very hard and difficult to execute well. The Musk Foundation, established in 2002, funds renewable energy, human space exploration, pediatric research, and science and engineering education. A 2024 New York Times investigation characterized much of the giving as haphazard and self-serving, noting donations that produced tax benefits and helped Musk's businesses. Examples include $20 million to Cameron County schools after a SpaceX incident and $10 million to Brownsville revitalization. Between 2020 and 2024, Musk donated tax-deductible stock worth over $7 billion to the foundation. Comparatively, MacKenzie Scott has donated over $19.25 billion since 2020.
