Craig Newmark donated nearly $200 million to journalism, funding startups, investigative outlets, local news, and a City University of New York graduate journalism school. Grants included $20 million to launch The Markup, $2.5 million to WNYC, support for ProPublica, Mother Jones, The 19th, The City, The Forward, and Hell Gate, plus $30 million to the CUNY J-school now named the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism with the aim of making it tuition-free. The Markup later relaunched under new leadership and was acquired by CalMatters in 2024. Newmark reports he is no longer a billionaire and has pledged to give away more than half his fortune. He plans to scale back journalism funding, shift to cybersecurity and support for military families and veterans, and acknowledges gaps in audience development and marketing.
