Athletes win collegiate cup to support healthy coral reefs | Cornell Chronicle
Briefly

In the lead-up to Earth Day, over 200 Cornell student-athletes and coaches participated in a competition to track workout hours, which contributed to coral restoration in the South Pacific. They won the EcoAthletes Collegiate Cup, outpacing 28 other universities with 2,400 workout hours, leading to the planting of 1,050 corals. Spearheaded by the Cornell Student-Athletes for Sustainability, their efforts emphasized the importance of climate action and raised awareness about ocean health. The initiative included educational events and outreach to engage the community in sustainability efforts.
"We drafted emails, created flyers with a QR code to make registration simple and brainstormed a lengthy list of people and organizations who might be interested in this opportunity and who could pass it to others as well," Pape said.
"Their efforts far outpaced their competitors, accounting for more than 30% of the total corals planted across all teams," highlighting their significant impact.
