France has declared a state of emergency in its Pacific island territory of New Caledonia and deployed police and military reinforcements to end days of unrest over changes in provincial election rules, which resulted in casualties and injuries.
Authorities have placed five suspects under house arrest and arrested over 200 rioters as they aim to restore public order and protect the population in New Caledonia during the 12-day state of emergency.
