Micheal Martin congratulates newly elected army commander Joseph Aoun as president, ending two-year deadlock

"I congratulate the people of Lebanon on the election of a President and wish Joseph Aoun every success in his new office," said Mr Martin in a statement. "The Lebanese people deserve stable institutions and a functioning government. I hope today's decision will be followed by the appointment of a Prime Minister and the formation of a government that can implement the necessary reforms, reconstruction and recovery in Lebanon."

"Implementation of the ceasefire agreement and restoration of security and stability across Lebanon will be important challenges. UNIFIL continues to make an important contribution in this regard and Ireland remains committed to this role and the contribution of Irish peacekeepers. The people of Lebanon can count on Ireland's continuing support in their journey towards lasting peace and stability."
