Lebanon's authorities have detained Riad Salameh, the former central bank governor, after an investigation into financial dealings with brokerage firm Optimum Invest, amid widespread accusations of corruption and financial mismanagement.
Salameh, who oversaw Banque du Liban for 30 years and was once credited with economic revival, is now facing scrutiny for allegedly accruing over $110 million through financial crimes.
Public prosecutor Jamal al-Hajjar stated that Salameh is undergoing a four-day detention pending further investigation, though specific allegations were not disclosed during the brief interview.
Despite Salameh's arrest and allegations of wrongdoing, a forensic audit of Optimum Invest reportedly found no evidence of illegality, complicating the narrative surrounding his financial dealings.
