Israel begins 'targeted operations' in Lebanon; progress unclear

"What we feared has materialized," said Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the U.N. special coordinator for Lebanon. "With strikes throughout Lebanon, including in the heart of Beirut, violence is spiraling to dangerous heights."
The Israel Defense Forces called up four brigades of reservists to boost the force massing in the north and warned civilians in more than two dozen Lebanese villages to evacuate.
Israeli forces have assassinated much of the group's top leadership, including its longtime chief, Hasan Nasrallah, and have wounded thousands by turning handheld pagers into bombs.
At least 1,358 people have been killed in Lebanon since Sept. 17, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. Around a million have been displaced, leading many in Beirut to sleep outdoors.
