This case is unusual because of its sheer horror, but it's also unusual that it resulted in a conviction - putting it into that one percent of rape complaints that result in a conviction.
Even in this case we saw attempts to blame Gisele or cast doubt on whether she 'really' didn't know what was happening to her. Most rape cases are more complicated; they lack video evidence or witnesses and often come down to one person's word against another.
The Pelicot case shows us how ingrained is the instinct to doubt a woman's word, attack her credibility and give the benefit of the doubt to rapists.
To answer this question, I spoke to feminist journalist and campaigner Megan Clement, who sees some cause for hope.
