Serge Atlaoui, a French citizen sentenced to death in Indonesia for drug offences, will be repatriated to France after a recent agreement signed by both governments. Atlaoui, imprisoned since 2005 and maintaining his innocence, requested to serve the remainder of his sentence in France. This deal comes shortly after the repatriation of five Australian drug convicts. France's ambassador expressed gratitude towards Indonesia for this arrangement, enhancing legal cooperation and bilateral relationships between the two countries. A lifetime sentence imposed on Atlaoui was later increased to death, reflecting the severity of drug laws in Indonesia.
"We want to develop our legal cooperation in a much more straightforward way," he said. "We are reinforcing our bilateral relationship, we have a real partnership."
"Once Atlaoui is repatriated, the authority to treat the convict is entirely under the French government," Mahendra stated.
