Unions in France are protesting job cuts at ArcelorMittal and are pushing for government intervention to nationalize its operations, drawing parallels with recent UK nationalization of British Steel. CGT union leader Sophie Binet addressed demonstrators, pledging to take their proposals to President Macron. ArcelorMittal plans to eliminate 600 positions while navigating industry challenges exacerbated by U.S. tariffs. The company recently reported significant profits but is moving positions overseas and delaying investments, leading unions to question why France can't follow other nations in intervening.
"I will deliver to him the CGT proposals to nationalise the group's French operations," she told the protesting workers.
"The Italians have done it, the British have done it... so why aren't we French able to also do it?" asked regional CGT head Gaetan Lecocq.
ArcelorMittal announced plans last month to cut 600 jobs across the seven sites it has in France.
It is in the process of negotiating the job reductions with unions.
