At the G20 summit in South Africa, European leaders, led by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, urged nations in the global south to unequivocally back the international rules-based order, emphasizing the importance of supporting Ukraine's sovereignty. Barrot clarified that geopolitical divisions should focus on those who uphold international law versus those who use force. He defended Western responses to various global crises by asserting that justice, not geographical alignment, should guide perspectives on international violations.
Barrot wrote: "The discussion we should be having, at G20 meetings and everywhere else, is not the clash between north and south, but between those who support the law and those who support power by force."
Barrot rejects the charge of double standards, stating: "In France, our moral compass is not guided by north or south, but by justice. We do not avert our eyes from any crisis or violation of international law."
