On Tuesday, French farmers and taxi drivers announced they would suspend or scale back protests, indicating a shift after negotiations with the government. Farmers' union leader Arnaud Rousseau reported good news regarding the Duplomb bill's consideration, which aims to ease regulations affecting farmers, despite facing opposition from environmentalists. The bill's previous rejection by a parliamentary bloc necessitates new discussions in a joint committee. Meanwhile, taxi drivers plan to reduce their protests at airports, although full suspension wasn't mentioned, leaving room for potential further demonstrations as talks continue.
"We're suspending the mobilisation (...) Tractors are returning to their farms, even though we had planned to still be there this Tuesday and Wednesday," he said.
"It's good news, even if it's difficult to explain. The spectacle isn't encouraging, but what matters is seeing concrete results on our farms," Rousseau told RMC.
The Duplomb bill is an agriculture bill making its way through parliament that intends to 'remove constraints placed on farmers', in part by allowing for easier access to pesticides.
However, it remains possible that new demonstrations could spring up again, as negotiations move forward with the government.
