The National Rally party won about 34 percent of the vote, far ahead of President Macron's Renaissance party. This victory brings their nationalist and anti-immigrant politics to the threshold of power for the first time.
A coalition of left-wing parties, called the New Popular Front, won about 29 percent of the vote. Turnout was high at over 65 percent, reflecting voters' importance attached to the snap election.
