France to increase electricity charges for households without a Linky
Briefly

In France, the Linky smart meter is prevalent in households, efficiently tracking electricity usage and sending data to suppliers for accurate billing. While most embrace its benefits, approximately 2 million households still lack installation. From August 2025, those refusing to install will face an annual extra fee of up to €38.88. The regulatory body CRE states the charge helps cover costs for traditional meter reading methods, as electricity companies benefit from the efficiencies offered by Linky devices.
Electricity companies save money with Linky smart meters, which allow automated bill calculations and precise consumption tracking, benefiting both providers and households.
Households without a Linky will incur annual fees starting August 2025, prompting installation or face charges for those who refuse to comply.
