The rightwing prime minister, Michel Barnier, met Macron for just over an hour in order to hand in his resignation letter, a day after his minority coalition became the first to be toppled by a no-confidence vote in more than 60 years.
Yael Braun-Pivet, the president of the national assembly, met Macron on Thursday and urged him to move quickly, stating, 'There must not be any political hesitation.' A swift appointment is critical.
Barnier's final speech noted, 'The no-confidence motion in my government would make everything more serious and more difficult,' emphasizing the increased challenges for the incoming prime minister.
As France enters a period of political turmoil, the Elysee issued a statement to say Barnier's resignation had been accepted and that his government would handle day-to-day issues.
