Under Colonel Assimi Goita's leadership since the 2020 coup, Mali has seen a decline in civic freedoms, with political activities suspended and elections postponed. While initial support for Goita existed, recent protests reflect a growing public dissent against the military government especially after proposals to extend his rule until 2030. Critics view these developments as a consolidation of power, which has awakened a renewed commitment among Malians to oppose the regime, indicating a shift in public sentiment from initial support to active resistance against authoritarianism.
Public anger at the military government was evident on May 3 when hundreds of people gathered in Bamako with defiant fists raised in protest.
Many had promised to return to the streets if the regime held on to power indefinitely. For many people, even those who supported the government at first, this is a step too far.
