French finance minister Éric Lombard has announced a new investment product through BPI France, allowing individuals to invest in the defense sector starting at €500. In light of uncertainties surrounding American support, Lombard emphasized the need for the EU to take charge of its defense. The initiative aims to raise €450 million to aid French defense companies, with investments being locked for at least five years. This product reflects a trend where nations solicit public investments to bolster military capabilities while providing low-risk options.
"BPI France (France's public investment bank) will launch a product. For €500 you can become an indirect shareholder in companies in the defence sector" France's finance minister, Éric Lombard, told French news outlet TF1 on Thursday.
"The American umbrella has become uncertain (...) the European Union must become adults in terms of their own defence".
"I urge people to invest more in the war economy, in the long term, the returns are better than a savings account."
"Although full details of the defence investment are yet to be released, other savings or investment packages are available to finance the military self-sufficiency campaign."
