The U.N. envoy to Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, suggested dividing the territory between Morocco and the Polisario Front as a means to resolve the long-standing conflict. This approach aims to provide a fair choice for the local residents on who they wish to live under and was discussed recently at a closed U.N. Security Council meeting. His proposal seeks to balance both sides' interests while granting sovereignty recognition over the territory.
De Mistura noted that partition isn't a new idea, recalling that during the late 1970s, when Mauritania withdrew, it ceded part of Western Sahara to Polisario. Previously, former U.N. envoy James Baker had also proposed a partition agreement, which did not materialize. De Mistura highlighted that although some countries showed interest in this proposal, neither Morocco nor the Polisario Front has demonstrated a willingness to consider it further at this time.
