Kévin Vauquelin sustained a fracture to the distal end of his fibula after returning from the Tour de France and subsequently underwent surgery in Lyon for a lesion of the tibiofibular interosseous membrane. He clarified on Instagram that the injury occurred while descending stairs with a suitcase, not during a party. The team initially expected two to three weeks on crutches, but surgical intervention has altered the prognosis and the recovery timeline is currently unknown. French media indicate the Rwanda World Championships are five weeks away, making selection unlikely. Vauquelin gained strong fan support during the Tour and his team faces sponsor uncertainty.
"To be clear, it was while going down the stairs with my suitcase, not at a party. Sorry to those who thought I was an alcoholic," he wrote on Instagram.
"After further examinations, Kévin Vauquelin underwent surgery in Lyon for a lesion of the tibiofibular interosseous membrane," Arkéa-B&B Hotels explained in a brief message via social media.
"His unavailability time will be communicated later," the team added.
