"Sylvain Amic wanted everyone to be able to access the marvels of art, from Manet to Soulages. He understood the force of universal emancipation of our culture."
"With an open spirit, Sylvain Amic was a warm man, attentive to the others, who believed in opening culture to everyone and every place. Art loses one of his best connoisseurs and a great servant of the state."
"Amic said previously that becoming the head of the Musée d'Orsay had always been "his dream"."
Sylvain Amic, director of Paris's Musée d'Orsay, died suddenly at 58 while on holiday in a village in the Gard, reportedly of natural causes. The French Culture Minister Rachida Dati announced the death. President Emmanuel Macron, who appointed Amic in 2024, praised his commitment to making art accessible and to the universal emancipation of culture. Dati described him as warm, attentive and intent on opening culture to everyone and every place. Amic had long sought the directorship, was appointed after Christophe Léribault left in April 2024, and aimed to rehange the collection, improve visitor conditions, attract younger audiences, and manage budget constraints amid record attendance of 4.9 million in 2024.
