Lebanon's new president has asked Nawaf Salam, head of the International Court of Justice, to form a government, amidst tensions with Hezbollah and its allies.
Salam’s nomination is perceived as a hopeful sign in the wake of the devastating aftermath of the 14-month Israel-Hezbollah conflict, which resulted in 4,000 deaths.
Following the 60-day truce brokered by the U.S. that ended the conflict, Salam's majority backing from legislators was met with celebrations in Beirut.
