Man loses appeal against Gisele Pelicot rape conviction
"A man has been found guilty on appeal of raping Gisele Pelicot after she was drugged unconscious by her husband and has been given an increased prison sentence of 10 years. Husamettin Dogan, 44, an unemployed builder, who had contested his first conviction last year, faced a retrial this week at Nimes court of appeal. A jury of five men and four women, sitting with three judges, found Dogan guilty on Thursday of raping Pelicot in her bedroom in southern France in the early hours of 29 June 2019."
"The court heard Dogan, a married father, made contact with her then husband, Dominique Pelicot, in an online chatroom called without her knowledge, where Pelicot was looking for men to come to his home to rape his wife after he had drugged her into a comatose state. Gisele Pelicot's lawyer, Antoine Camus, had told the court: We hope the jury will say loud and clear that in this country human rights are also women's rights that consent is personal, not delegated."
Husamettin Dogan, 44, was convicted on appeal of raping Gisele Pelicot after her husband drugged her unconscious and was sentenced to ten years in prison. A retrial at Nimes court of appeal produced a guilty verdict from a jury of five men and four women sitting with three judges for an attack in Pelicot's bedroom on 29 June 2019. Dogan contacted Dominique Pelicot via an online chatroom without Gisele's knowledge and traveled an hour to commit the assault after telling his wife he was going out. Dominique Pelicot received a 20-year sentence for repeatedly drugging his wife and inviting dozens of men to rape her; fifty other men were convicted and Dogan was the only appellant. The lead prosecutor had argued for a 12-year term, citing Dogan's refusal to accept responsibility.
