"I think the holiday is commercial but I still really like to celebrate it!"
"I think that when you love and are loved, the celebration can be enjoyable because you get to experience a deep feeling of community with others, but when you aren't in a loving relationship, you don't care as much because it is all commercial"
"For me, I know that there is no specific date to show your love, but I use this day to show it a little more"
Valentine's Day is not a major celebration for most people in France. Shops and restaurants display some decorations, but more than 60 percent of French adults consider the day a commercial holiday and only about 36 percent planned to mark it in 2022, rising to 41 percent among people in relationships. Average gift spending in France in 2022 was €114, up €12 from 2021. By comparison, a majority of Americans prioritize showing love on Valentine's Day and plan higher spending — about $193 on average and over $300 among millennials. Some French people still enjoy celebrating and attend events or take advantage of sales.
