The decision to name a submarine HMS Agincourt has been met with criticism due to its historical context, as the Agincourt battle in 1415 marked a significant English victory over French forces while Scotland fought alongside France. The suggestion has been made to balance this by considering the name Castillon, reflecting an important Scottish victory against England, highlighting the complex relationships in British history. Furthermore, there is commentary on political reactions regarding the renaming by King Charles, pointing to broader themes of historical interpretation and national identity.
Naming a vessel of the British Royal Navy after a defeat for a significant part of Britain seems odd, to say the least.
Curiously absent from the history syllabus in my English school.
The Royal Navy could probably power HMS Agincourt with the furious backpedalling of anti-woke Tory MPs.
If the Royal Navy was minded to name a vessel Agincourt, perhaps it could restore the balance by calling another one Castillon.
