French scientists sentenced over Russian consulate attack
Briefly

In a recent incident in Marseille, two French researchers were sentenced for throwing bottles at the Russian consulate, which Moscow classified as a terrorist attack. The court heard differing perspectives; Russian officials deemed the actions serious, while a French prosecutor minimized the threat, arguing they were expressions of dissent rather than terrorism. Both individuals received eight-month sentences, are expected to return home with electronic monitoring, and have been prohibited from approaching the consulate for five years. The event underscores rising tensions tied to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
"The acts committed are serious and present all the signs of a terrorist act," said the Russian consul, Stanislav Oranskiy, emphasizing Moscow's perspective on the incident.
"The terrorist aspect is a bit like the bottle, it goes," said prosecutor Olivier Redon, suggesting that the act should not be classified as terrorism.
"We see the behaviour of honest people," Redon contended, asserting that the researchers' actions did not pose a significant threat.
Sitja stated, "My wife had told me it was a very bad idea," reflecting on his decision to throw bottles at the consulate.
