An Air Corsica Airbus A320 departed Paris Orly and approached Ajaccio around midnight but encountered no response from the control tower and an unlit runway. Only one controller was on duty due to the late hour, and pilots circled the Gulf of Ajaccio while regional controllers assisted and ground staff investigated. Fire personnel alerted the gendarmerie after failing to contact the tower, and locked tower access delayed entry. Staff eventually found the controller asleep at his desk and restored runway lighting. Passengers remained calm and the controller tested negative for drugs and alcohol.
