After months of diplomatic tensions, French President Emmanuel Macron and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed their commitment to improve bilateral relations through a recent phone conversation. Key issues include Algeria's refusal to readmit nationals ordered out of France for criminal activities and the imprisonment of writer Boualem Sansal. Macron emphasized the need for a compassionate response towards Sansal, while also addressing the regional disputes exacerbated by France's support of Morocco's claims in Western Sahara, leading to a strained diplomatic situation.
The two presidents had a long, frank and friendly exchange on the state of bilateral relations and the tensions that have built up in recent months.
Macron reiterated his confidence in the farsightedness of President Tebboune while calling for a gesture of clemency and humanity towards Mr Boualem Sansal.
Although the diplomatic dispute has intensified this year, it began in earnest last July when France backed Morocco's longstanding claim to the disputed Western Sahara territory.
Algeria proceeded to recall its Paris ambassador after the decision was met with outrage by the Algerian government.
