France warns that strong storms could end deadly heatwave
France, Britain, and Portugal recorded their hottest May days ever during the heatwave. Temperatures stayed above 33C in the Paris region and above 30C in several other French areas on Saturday. Meteo-France expected a slightly cooler air mass to lower temperatures Saturday night, but warned of localized, sometimes strong storms across northern France with hail and wind gusts over 80 km/h. Sunday forecasts predicted storms in eastern areas including Strasbourg and Lyon, with temperatures falling across much of the country. France reached 37.8C in Charente, prompting cancelled train services, power cuts in some cities, and deaths in France and Britain attributed to the heat. Meteo-France said more extreme heatwaves are highly likely this summer.
