Colombian doctor Fredy Alexander Gonzales Torres was sentenced to six months suspended prison and fined €15,000 for doping offenses during the 2020 Tour de France. Although accused of administering intravenous drips and possessing doping substances, no riders tested positive, and Gonzales Torres plans to appeal. His lawyer emphasized that no doping products were seized during police investigations. During the trial, the court referred to Gonzales Torres as a 'guru-like guide' for his unconventional methods. Nairo Quintana, a prominent cyclist he treated, later faced a doping ban for tramadol, raising further questions about the case.
"I would like to confirm that no doping substances were ever found," Quintana stated. "It must be stressed that I have not been the subject of any accusation by the authorities."
Gonzales Torres' lawyer, Mohamed El Yousfi, argued that 'no doping product' had 'ever been seized' by police during their investigations, calling for an acquittal.
The court characterized Gonzales Torres as a 'guru-like guide' who utilized unorthodox methods such as magnets and body rubs to enhance riders' performance.
Two years later, Nairo Quintana tested positive for tramadol during the 2022 Tour de France, resulting in a ban despite no wrongdoing found in the previous trial.
