Ex-surgeon tells French court he used status to sexually abuse children
Briefly

Joel Le Scouarnec, a 74-year-old former surgeon, is on trial for sexually abusing hundreds of patients, particularly children, over a span of 25 years. In his testimony, he acknowledged exploiting his medical position to commit these criminal acts while asserting that his surgical practice remained unaffected by his paedophilia. Accused of targeting predominantly underage patients, including those unconscious from anesthesia, the case highlights the deeply troubling duality of his actions. Evidence against him includes notebooks detailing his abuses, now revealing the extent of his crimes to previously unaware victims.
I carried out my professional activity as well as I could, but at the same time I carried out sexual assaults on little patients. My medical treatment of patients does not erase the crimes that I carried out in the same period.
I betrayed them all. I lied to them to cover my activities, and I apologize to them for what I did. They thought that I was somebody, and in fact I'm the person who is before you now, who has committed crimes.
