The Entry & Exit System starts on October 12, 2025, becoming compulsory by April 2026. Execution will be phased due to readiness concerns, particularly at busy borders. The system enhances border security and digitizes entry and exit data for non-EU travelers while calculating the 90-day allowance for visa-free travel. Fingerprints and facial scans will be collected at Schengen zone entry and exit points. An upcoming ETIAS travel authorization will be introduced in late 2026, with fees increasing from €7 to €20.
The Entry & Exit System will come into effect on October 12th, 2025, and become compulsory at all EU/Schengen entry and exit points by April 2026.
The purpose of the Entry & Exit System is to enhance border security through stricter passport checks and to digitize travelers' entry and exit records.
