EU announces new push to overhaul visa system and deportations policy
"The priority is clear: bringing illegal arrival numbers down and keeping them down,"
"Abuse gives migration a bad name -- it undermines public trust and ultimately takes away from our ability to provide protection and undercuts our drive to attract talent,"
"only heightens its dependence on third countries to manage migration, while making it complicit in any rights violations that may result"
Irregular arrivals to the 27-nation EU fell by more than a quarter in 2025, according to the bloc's border agency. The EU strategy prioritizes reducing illegal arrivals and boosting deportations of failed asylum-seekers, and proposes so-called return hubs outside EU borders and harsher penalties, including longer detention, for migrants who refuse removal. The plan calls for assertive migration diplomacy to persuade third countries to stop departures and readmit nationals. Brussels is negotiating deals with North African states in exchange for aid and investments. Human-rights groups warn the approach risks complicity in rights violations. A reform plan is expected by year-end.
