Jamie Dornan recounted a startling preparation tactic for his role as Paul Spector: following a woman off a train to understand the sensations of pursuing someone. He mentioned, "This is a really bad reveal: I, like, followed a woman off the train one day to see what it felt like to pursue someone like that. I really kept my distance... I followed her around a couple of street corners and then was like: What are you doing?"
Aaron Eckhart revealed his own harrowing method when preparing for Rabbit Hole: feigning the loss of a child to connect with bereaved parents attending a support group. He detailed the emotional experience, noting, "It's very sensitive to go in there, of course it is. I did the research... you really believe that you just lost a child." He narrated the intensity of the group, stating, "Then one person goes... by that point you're just so flushed that you just start going and giving the details of the story."
Foster's preparation for Alpha Dog was also extreme; he lived on the streets to genuinely embody his character. He explained his rationale, stating, "In all transparency, I rolled with those guys on Alpha Dog, and I bought their drugs, but you have to ask yourself how far you can go and still come back." Foster acknowledged the risk, noting that experiencing the environment was sufficient without resorting to drugs.
