Michael Mina will open a new Bourbon Steak and a neighboring bar called The Eighth Rule inside The Westin St. Francis in Union Square this October. The Eighth Rule will be a bourbon-focused, reservation-only bar with 40 seats and ties to Stephen Curry's Gentleman's Cut bourbon. The partnership marks Curry's first hospitality project and Mina's return to the site where his first restaurant opened in 2004 and later closed in 2021. Mina operates 11 Bourbon Steak locations nationwide, and San Francisco has not had a Bourbon Steak since 2016. Mina and Curry first connected during the 2017 opening of International Smoke.
The new ventures mark Curry's first hospitality project and Mina's return to the spot where he opened the first Michael Mina restaurant in 2004 (it earned two Michelin stars the first year the Michelin Guide came to California and closed in 2021). While Mina has 11 locations of Bourbon Steak across the country, San Francisco hasn't had one since 2016.
The Eighth Rule is, fittingly, a bourbon-focused bar, as Curry launched his bourbon brand, Gentleman's Cut, two years ago. It will be an intimate space with only 40 seats, and will be reservation-only, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The name comes from the seven official rules of bourbon production, with Curry inviting guests to define their own eighth rule.
"Creating my own bourbon brand paired with my friendship with Michael is like a master class in hospitality!" Curry said in a news release. "I've always dreamt of creating my own little haven to bring people together, and now we have the perfect location. I cannot wait for people to come and see what we have in store."
