"With Halloween approaching, many of our readers want to avoid contributing to the problem of childhood obesity in America-approximately 1 in 5 U.S. children and adolescents now have obesity-or child labor on cacao plantations around the world. Recent reports show that 1.56 million children are engaged in child labor on cocoa farms in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana, which together produce nearly 60% of the world's cocoa."
"CSRHub ranks Mars, the largest confectioner in the world, in the 85th percentile among food companies across corporate social responsibility, environment, social, and governance metrics. They note Nestlé's involvement in Sudan and use of genetically modified ingredients. But Nestlé still ranks impressively in the 94 th percentile across all areas of its business. Meanwhile, Nestlé Malaysia earns the 96 th percentile. However, Nestlé Côte d'Ivoire comes in within a dismal 21st percentile."
Approximately one in five U.S. children and adolescents have obesity. Recent reports show 1.56 million children are engaged in child labor on cocoa farms in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana, which produce nearly 60% of the world's cocoa. Complex corporate structures make it difficult to assess candy companies' practices, and CSRHub rankings vary widely across companies and subsidiaries. The U.S. Department of Labor reports children in Côte d'Ivoire face some of the worst forms of child labor, including harvesting cocoa and coffee and cases linked to human trafficking. Some healthier, individually wrapped alternatives include CLIF certified organic snack bars and fruit leather and MySuperSnack granola bites made with organic ingredients and free of peanuts and tree nuts. Plastic candy wrappers also contribute to landfill waste.
