This New East Cambridge Restaurant Is All About Affordable Tacos and Lots of Kitsch
"The team behind the over-the-top Chinese restaurant Wusong Road is developing a reputation for delightful extravagance. Look no further than its latest restaurant, Gato Exotico, in the CambridgeSide mall. This Mexican restaurant is no exception, leaning into Aztec-inspired imagery in the immersive decor and classic dishes on the menu. Culinary direction is led by former Wusong Road sous chef and Mexico City native Sergio Enriquez."
"And, like Wusong, they have a robust list of tiki cocktails and a collection of kitschy, one-of-a-kind mugs to serve them in. The beef tongue taco ($5 each) serves Mexico City-style meat, where it's braised tender and sliced thin, served with shaved cabbage on top for extra crunch. It's a delectable bite for a low price tag. For a bit of refreshment in between the house-made chips, try the watermelon and jicama salad ($8). The watermelon is marinated in lime and tossed with pumpkin seeds,"
Gato Exotico occupies a space in the CambridgeSide mall and continues the Wusong Road team's extravagant, immersive approach with Aztec-inspired imagery and kitschy decor. Culinary direction comes from Mexico City native and former Wusong Road sous chef Sergio Enriquez. The menu features classic Mexican dishes priced under $20, including a $5 braised beef tongue taco, an $8 watermelon and jicama salad marinated in lime with pumpkin seeds and cotija, and a $20 carne asada plate with beans, rice, tortillas, and roasted jalapeƱos. A robust tiki cocktail list is served in one-of-a-kind mugs. The menu accommodates gluten-free and vegetarian diners; most tacos can be made as quesadillas for an extra $6.
