Irene Kang, a bilingual children's book author, inspired by a boba toy, aimed to create a kimchi plush toy to celebrate her Korean heritage. After an unsuccessful search for a pre-existing kimchi toy, she felt compelled to design one herself. Despite her husband's skepticism, she pursued this venture, learning about the toy industry, creating prototypes, and eventually launching a Kickstarter campaign. The resulting 16-inch plush features elements that represent the traditional fermented dish, showcasing unique designs, texture, and cultural pride.
I was shocked that one didn't exist. I really felt the need to create it.
I didn't know anything about the toy plushie industry, so it was a new journey.
Each doll would be a little different. Some puffier and longer, but all with the same red-fringed leaves imprinted with diamond stitches.
This 16-inch, soft kimchi plush, which Kang describes as 'the size of a newborn baby', would also have some human-like features.
