Springfield dry sausage plant to close, cutting 190 jobs
"Workers and communities deserve to be protected from dangerous chemical releases,"
"EPA is taking this action to protect human health and the environment."
"Smithfield remains steadfast in our commitment to transparent reporting on our environmental practices,"
Smithfield Foods will close its Springfield, Massachusetts dry sausage facility by August, eliminating 190 jobs and ending the company’s only Massachusetts production operation. Production will be absorbed by other packaged-meats plants, with transition support and opportunities to apply for positions elsewhere in the company; the nearest Smithfield production facility to Massachusetts is in New Jersey. EPA inspections in 2021 found problems managing anhydrous ammonia at the Springfield plant; Smithfield fixed the issues, reached a nearly $140,000 settlement, and is now in compliance. Smithfield, owned by WH Group, reports over $14 billion in annual sales, returned to public markets in 2025, and employs about 32,000 people worldwide.
